If you ever wondered how to build a model house out of cardboard, then you’ll be pleased to know the plans have numbered parts and putting them together with card is really easy to follow. You’ll also discover lots of demonstration videos on this website, and customers also get free access to a Printing and Assembly Guide showing how to construct houses and other structures from cardboard. The 5 house plans (3 houses and 2 bungalows) in this series feature brickwork designs so would look at home in the same residential neighborhood with other brick homes from the same era. The neighbours in the miniature street scene you are creating would likely have similar residences, which is usually what you see when visiting actual neighborhoods in real life. In the real world the homes would most likely have been constructed by the same builder around the same year, so having 5 brick homes and bungalows in one street is logical. The builder probably did a bulk buy on materials and bought a big quantity of bricks for a special price. That’s the likely real life scenario, so replicating that in miniature makes perfect sense for model railroaders and people creating dioramas, or for children completing school projects.

You can create an entire street scene with by printing out duplicate copies of these paper houses, so 5 homes could easily become 15 homes, with each one looking unique with the help of some clever positioning of miniature scenery elements such as trees, bushes, gardens, driveways, plastic people and animal figures etc.

How To Build A Model House Out Of Cardboard – Materials and Supplies Needed

Not much is need to make up these houses from the downloaded plans. Print the plans on regular photo copy paper, and glue the printed plans onto card-stock (cardboard from an old muesli / cornflake pack is definitely suitable). The video below of the small general store show the basic construction process for these house models.

Your browser does not support the video tag.

Cut out the plans which will now be mounted on the card, and glue the individual pieces together. So as you can see materials required for making these miniature homes is minimal. The whole construction process for making these 5 scale model houses out of cardboard takes only minutes and they are unbelievably sturdy when dry. That’s not to say you couldn’t add additional cardboard supports for additional strengthening if you feel it necessary. Take a close up inspection of the model houses and you’ll spot the intricate detailing of the brickwork texture is already finished for you. So you won’t need to spend hours adding realistic touches or painting brickwork trying to make it look genuine.

Each of the plans for making these cardboard model houses has been pre-weathered to add character and true realism to the street scene. You can still add your own weathering or finishing touches if you like, however the photo-like images used in the designs are just like looking at “life-like” real world structures.

The 4 scale model houses to build in this series are very versatile and adaptable. This is because, once assembled the 4 dwellings can be positioned as separate homes (detached), or joined together in various configurations to form semi detached dwellings. A semi-detached home is typically a small single family house that shares one common wall with the neighboring dwelling. Often, semi-detached houses are built as pairs where the layout of each home is a mirror image (or close to mirror image) of the one next door.

As you can see from the above drawing, the homes in this series can be positioned together (side-by-side) to form semi detached dwellings. They have similar roof lines so could easily be joined as semi detached units, if you choose to do so. Alternatively, you could position them on your model railroad layout as separate (stand-alone) residences. If you want to move a garage from one end to the other, it is simply a case of cutting a line down the brickwork and joining it to the other end of the building. The designs are very flexible and adaptable.

These 4 printable plans are perfect for modeling as a small miniature village setting. The paper models can be constructed with the aid of some scrap cardboard (used cereal container card) to HO scale size, N scale size, or to OO UK scale sizing. The assembled house models would look good together in the same neighbourhood, street setting, or sit together to form a small retirement or country village scene.

The attention to detail and reality seen in the brickwork textures, coupled with the low price of these models is why these designs are such a good choice for the serious model railroader, or craftsperson. The completed structures are very durable and will last for decades, and it is hard to believe they are put together with cardboard. Obviously they can be further strengthened with the addition of extra card glued inside completed models.

After downloading, the PDF plans for these 3 miniature houses can be printed out and constructed to the UK OO gauge size, to the smaller N scale, or they can be made into HO scale houses for those model railroaders specializing in operating HO scale trains. These plans are also ideal for craftspeople who just like to make models as a leisure hobby, or for those students doing school art projects, or for the serious diorama construction artist. The procedure for downloading, printing, and assembling these miniature houses is very straightforward.

Making Amazing OO, N Scale, and HO Scale Miniature Houses Is a Simple Step-By-Step Process

Construction is very straightforward and requires some scrap cardboard and basic tools found around the home. The photos below show construction of a small railway station which is the same method used to make these scale model miniature houses.

In real life, homes in the same street or district are often built of similar materials and to similar designs. This is often because the dwellings were constructed around the same time, and would have likely been constructed by the same builder or residential sub-division developer. So, it follows that positioning these 3 miniature HO scale houses together on the same street would make logical sense. Furthermore, is was also reasonably common for the builder to construct duplicate homes in the same street or neighborhood. In some cases they would have been positioned on the land slightly differently, or landscaped in a totally different style to add variation to the neighborhood. The hobbyist model maker can do the same when creating their railroad scenery or diorama. Multiple copies of these plans can be printed out without breaching copyright laws, with the important stipulation that they must be used for private personal use (that rules out non-commercial use of the plans). So, the hobbyist could easily make 6, or even 12 houses by using these 3 downloaded plans.

Adapting the assembly of the models is easy and enables the crafts person to inset the window frames and doors, or even relocate them to a different position during assembly. The paper plans are like templates so provide flexibility and the possibility to add personal uniqueness to each miniature house that is constructed.

Look above and you’ll see a package of scale model house plans you can buy for below half the price of buying individual house plans. These are printable models with each plan being used to construct a cardboard model house using highly detailed paper textures including timber, brick and stucco. They can be downloaded in two sizes for making n scale houses, and ho scale houses out of paper and scrap cardboard.NOTE: The model railroad buildings and houses featured on this website can be made for OO, HO, or N scale model railroads or dioramas. They are popular with serious model railroaders, hobbyists, and with children working on school projects. Each house plan gets downloaded once and can be printed on several occasions for private, that’s non-commercial, use.
