How Culverts And Drains Can Add True Realism To Model Railroads
Building walls, bridges, and tunnel portals is enormous fun. One of the simplest types of bridges to install on your layout is a culvert. Culverts are not what most people think of when they consider a bridge, but no railroad can function without them. In real life, they provide pathways for drainage, foot traffic, and even vehicles.
Culverts appear in many shapes, too. Pipes, stone arches, wood timbers and pre-formed concrete cylinders have been used over the years to tunnel beneath the rails. For the modeler, culvert kits with detailed facing are for sale from several sources such as Woodland Scenics, Rix and Monroe Models. Simple culverts can be made from small sections of PVC pipe of appropriate size or aluminium foil wrapped around a large coarse threaded bolt to simulate corrugated steel.
Modeling realistically will usually involve creating your right-of-way on roadbed that is elevated above grade. Railroads do this to provide a level and smooth right of way with easy transitions to curves and inclines. When the grade is modeled accurately, there should be ample room to install a culvert under existing trackage with little trouble. A hole of appropriate size is cut through the scenery under the roadbed and the culvert inserted. Fill in any openings around the outside of the culvert with Sculptamold or foliage to mask the scenery cuts, then think about adding a small pool of standing water and weeds or a walkway leading to the culvert, depending on the use you intended for the culvert.
If you plan to buy model train buildings, walls, bridges, or tunnel portals then these printable paper models are a fraction of the cost of the plastic model kits for sale in hobby shops or online. Although the plastic kits can look very good when all the parts are assembled, painted and weathered… the cost of plastic model kits can be easily be $50 to $100 or more per kit. The paper models of bridges, walls, tunnel portals, buildings and structures you’ll see on this website can look just as good (if not better), because they are already finished in brickwork, stone, steel, concrete, or wood finish… and they are already aged and pre weathered so they don’t look like they just came out of a box. The construction method of these printable kits is simple and very durable for long life protection. Full details of what you get is explained in the demonstration videos.
